I submitted a proposal for the 2020 series of Hearts in SF, an annual public art installation started in 2004 by the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation for fundraising purposes. The heart theme comes from the famous Tony Bennett song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” My proposal was based on my first Commence painting, Launch.
I had a few technical challenges, because I was stubborn about wanting to use oil paint, and because I needed to create silhouette figures that would work on the curved surface of the heart (hearts are provided by the Foundation). In the end, it all worked out and I was happy with the result, which was prominently featured by the Foundation in their promotional materials and in their exhibit at Macy’s. It was part of their grand finale event at Oracle Park, and it was fun seeing it projected on the big screen.
