Commence 1: Launch •

23 x 18″

Standing out from backgrounds of densely interwoven color, the focal characters in Commence each contain the white of a blank page, signifying our perception of separateness and singularity contrasted with a vast interconnected landscape.

Secondary characters cluster nearby, containing the larger pattern and representing influences from others on all levels: past and present, known and unknown.

The action of the primary character is identified in each piece’s title. Taking action, we express the core of our individuality, but every move also takes place in a web of almost infinite connection with others, with nature, and with history. Commence seeks to make this sometimes hard-to-identify web of influence visible and assert our role in shaping it.

Work is not separated from my life. It’s all one thing because my life is involved in how you see. I can’t suddenly “become” an artist. It all has to flow together. I don’t “come to work”; I come to life.
